Benzocaine (Benzocaine), also known as Anaesthesine, is the scientific name of ethyl p-aminobenzoate

Benzocaine, sold under the brand name Orajel amongst others, is an ester local anesthetic commonly used as a topical pain reliever or in cough drops. It is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter anesthetic ointments such as products for oral ulcers.

Do not use large amounts of benzocaine topical. Do not cover treated skin areas with a bandage or plastic wrap without medical advice. Do not use benzocaine topical to treat large skin areas or deep puncture wounds. Avoid using the medicine on skin that is raw or blistered, such as a severe burn or abrasion.

Benzocaine occurs in two forms: a crystalline salt (benzocaine HCl) that is soluble in water at 0.4 g/L, and a nonwater-soluble basic form that must be dissolved in ethyl alcohol at a concentration of 0.2 g/ml before it is sufficiently soluble in water to create a functional induction dose.
